Dear Mark and Mona,

In this letter we will tell you a little about our school and what is happening here.

Our school is called Björngårdsskolan, in English that would mean ”Bear yard school”. In earlier days they actually kept bears in this area! All the classes have names after swedish animal wildlife, we are called ”Vargen – the Wolf”.

We have four mentors in our class: Anna, Eva, Magnus and Marina. Besides them we have some other teachers in subjects like art, handicraft, woodwork and music. We also have a school nurse, her name is Ulla. She always helps us when we are hurt or ill.

We start school at 8.30 am and before the teacher comes we hang out in the hallway and talk with friends. Especially on Mondays we talk a lot about the weekend!

In our classroom we have a Smartboard, a blackboard and laptops to use when we need them. On the walls we have nice paintings that we made ourselves in different projects.

We start every day with 15 minutes of fiction reading. We choose a book we like and when we have read 100 books alltogether in the class we will get a prize. Maybe see a movie or bake a cake together!

Sometimes our class is divided into two groups, when we have music class, handicrafts or arts for example.

In the middle of the day, around twelve o’clock, we have lunch. In Sweden we don’t pay extra for lunch at school, it is allready paid for by taxes. In our school we have a restaurant called ”Silverskeden” which means ”the Silver spoon”. The food there is home made and varies, sometimes we like it and sometimes not! Today we had meatloaf and pasta, yummy! We are curious about what the food is like in other schools in Europe!

After lunch we have 35 minutes break and we can spend it outside, in the library or in a activity area with computer games, ping pong table and other cool stuff. In the school yard we have a football field and a basket ball field. For the smaller kids there are sand pits, toys and a scaffold.

But we don´t eat or play all the time, we also do schoolwork..

Picture
In maths we now do volume and weight, that’s fun and not very difficult!
In social science we learn history at the moment, about the middle ages. We work in small groups and later we will report to class what we learned. We have prepared for this with rethoric in Swedish class.

In English class we actually got this letter as an assignment. Everybody has written letters about school and now we put them all together a s one letter!

Once every week we work with individual studies depending on what we need or want to develop, that is one of our favourite time of the week!

Picture
We also have a subject called ”The pupil´s choise”. Then we can choose from a list of activities like arts, drama, digital filmmaking, sports, swimming and other stuff. That’s really great!

We have physical training two hours every week, and at the moment we are skating on a lake just outside the city or on ice in a stadium nearby.

We have extra study every Tuesday, when we can catch up if we were ill or if there is something we find difficult.

Picture
All the classes in our school have class council every week. There we discuss things that are important to us and things we want to change at school. Sometimes issues are brought further to the School Council where representatives from all classes from grade two to six go every other week. Both the chairwoman and the secretary there are pupils from our class!

Two or three times every semester we have gatherings in our assembly hall. It can be a school play or the choir singing or even the teachers doing sketches sometimes. Then we always sing the school song that we all learn by heart when we start here.

Well, that was a lot actually and we hope that you now know more about school in Sweden and our school. We also put some pictures on the site for you to see.

Best regards,

grade 5 ”Vargen” (the Wolf)
